our thousand words version

This morning i told a story to my student titled a thousand words. This is the story about a man that his life related to a tree. Every time he speaks, one leaves will fall. At first he just ignore it. He speak a lots since he’s working as an literary agent. One by one the leaves fallin down. Finally he started to seek his opportunity to stay alive. He started to change his life by less speaking and try to make peaces in all of his relationship. Now he speaks very carefully because he doesn’t want to die.

I used that story to influence my students. For the information, my students are getting more talkactive during these days. They seems to have ton’s of things to talk about and found that it’s hard to listen. They become more enthusiastic and active, so… i have inspired by this story.

Each morning i give my students 15 leaves picture on the whiteboard. I told them that each time they speak with their friends, even to the teacher, their leaves will fall down. Even if they asking something to the teacher. I told them that they can speak, i don’t want to forbid them to speak or asking the lesson that they don’t understand. And i’m bolding the words that I want them to speak but the important thing only (such as asking something from the lesson that they dont understand, rather than blaming each other because they’re very noisy). I encourage them by saying that silentness is not our main purpose, but how they arrange their word into something important and more usefull and nice word, that’s is our main purpose. They can speak a lot during the break time, but not on the lesson or circle time.  I also told them that if they can keep their leaves until the last circle time, students that have the most leaves will be added 1 leaves for each day and in the end of they week, their leaves can be exchange with the star cards. This leaves function are different from star cards. we used star card for their behaviour such as kicking, making noise with their pencil or pencil case etc  (because we only give 4 star card, so i the star card easily taken, it’ll be a nightmare for them). This leaves is for their talking habbit.

This is my first day witn this system and I already read whose leaves that will fall. One of my students as ussual, asked the teachers (me and ms dian) to make him as a star of today. I remind him that star of today will be given only  to someone that act very nice and not crying students. He had to be more patient and less talking. He already told us about his willing to be the star but each time he speaks, I cross his leaves. He said, oke I dont want to speak again, but he still speaking. From 15 leaves that i give to him, only 6 that left.Ii’m quite suprised to see that he still have 6 leaves. My another talkactive students have 5 leaves remained and the most thing that makes me suprised is, some of them, still have 15 leaves. Means that they keep silent during the lesson. Its so WOW for me :D.

I’ll aplied this system until their behaviour can change. I assume it’ll take 2-3 month to make this as a habbit. But as we know, dealing with a kids can not be measured with time because some of kids can adapted faster that the other kids. But hopefully this system can make our class become more productive and less talking.

dear teacher…

Dear teacher….

I know that I’m not perfect

Sometimes I make mistake that makes you mad

But please forgive me

Cos I don’t mean to be that mean

Dear teacher….

I need your guidance

Since I don’t know what is good and what is wrong

I’m just 7 years old

Please guide me

Don’t put label on me

Just accept me just the way I am

See me just the way I am

In my good or bad behaviour

I really need your guidance to show that I have the good side or good quality inside

If u just see me in my dark side, that would I become in my future

You can use me to help you

But you also can get rid of me, if u feel that I’m bad…

But please… let me show you my best quality.

I would be proud to show it to u

As long as you patiently guide me and willing to wait me in my process….

It’ll come out anyway…

Dear teacher… I know that I can be good

But it needs your supports also

Please… please help me to reach it…

I love you…

Your students…

“and the star of today is…..”

Russell was crying on Wednesday since he didn’t get star of today. star of today is our daily reward for our student. students get 4 star card in the morning if they finished the daily diary and already sign by their parents (mom or dad).  we will add their star card if they can answer the question or follow our instruction or finished their lunch. But if they do the opposites such as keep talking during the lesson, walking around, joking or cant focused on doing the task, we will give them 1st until 3rd  reminder and then we will take their star card. We can also take the star card if they are running or doing dangerous thing such as hitting, kicking or hurting their friend.

Not only Russell, we have 18 other kids that also wants to be our star of today. “Star of today” is their proud. Though after that they had to return their star card again to us, but still, they are really proud to be star of today. we have two kids that always get the star of today, Russell and Virly. They can answer most of our question because they are smart. They can also act very nicely to us. But sometimes Russell still have to take turn and get reminder from the teacher since sometimes he’s still running around or cant be focused with the lesson (but he still can answer the question). At this time, usually Russell didn’t get the card, sometime’s he’s card even taken by the teacher.

I remember in my previous class, my partner introduced me with this kind of reward. Its called smile card. Same rules, we give the card if they finished the daily diary and this card could be added or even taken by the teacher. Sometimes we give 5 extra smile card if they can act nicely for the whole day. They will get thumbs from us if they can get thumbs from all the teacher that teach in that day. so they had to act nicely and listen to the teacher in order to get these thumbs from us at the end of the day. And its really helps us. Each day they asked us, how is our class for today miss?? If they got 2 thumbs from the us, they will shout happily because they will get 5 extra smile card. But different with our class now, we didn’t announce the best student of today. Only adding 5 smile card for them by writing it.

We didn’t provide sticker or stamps, but only a card that will be given back in the end of our days. Star car, smile card, or whatever it called, sometimes it helps our students to do their best. We are not to generous to share the card, but we also not so easily to take the card. We really strict to the students that can act appropriately in that day. So it is depend on the students itself. We will generously share the card during the quizzes and take the card if they are really can not listen to our instruction. But 1-3 reminder itself already helps us to “threat” our kids. We also try to give it alternately to our student. Not only for Russell and Virly, we try our best to give the card to the middle level student by give one cad if they helps their friend, if they can sits nicely or else. If we have quizzes, we give chances to all of our students to answer the question.

One thing that I remember, kids always want to try their best to be a star in our eyes. That’s why we have to give them a chance to prove that they can be our star. Not only by giving medals or else, but by saying “you are our star of today” that’ll make them proud and encourage them do do their best in another day.

when civic assessment comes…. ~a thought~

Today we’re having a civic assessment. We learn about  religion and tribes in Indonesia. For the 5 religion, i make it as ussual, they have to do the worksheet. But for the tribes, i make it different. We have a big Indonesian map on the wall of our school. Sometimes i asked my student to find cities in Indonesia during our circle time. I mentioned name of a city and they had to find it. Sometimes i even mention list of city that i’ve never been heard before but its written on the map.

Back to the assessment, i have pictures from indonesian tribes and i asked my student to find the city that have the characteristic. My students really loved it. They are not see it as an assessment but as a game. They soon knowed where is 5 big island Ind Indonesia such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. They also learn to notice the small island in Indonesia by looking for Madura, or Nusa Tenggara.

After school i watched a movie with my friend. The title is ” Tanah Surga… Katanya”. Its an Indonesian movie. Though it is Indonesian movie, this movie is different than any other movie that i’ve watched before. Deddy mizwar made this movie. The story itself about Indonesian people that live in border line between Indonesian and Malaysian. It is really absurd for me to see how Kalimantanese lived, esp in the borderline.

I imagine how different between my student and the students that lived there. They dont have any facilities like we do. They dont have any big map to learn about Indonesia. They even just have a small building that called school and one teacher to teach grade 3 and 4.  Some of them don’t know how to sing Indonesia Raya song. they only knew “Kolam Susu” that sang by Koes Plus. They even have ringgit Malaysia as their money, and not Indonesian money.

I said this to my friend : i’m so lucky to be here with all the facillities that i have, so i can improving myself. I can find any resources by internet and make  an interesting teaching tools. But its really hard for them to get any resources because they are surounded by forrest and there’s no signal for the internet. They have to go to Malaysia to get the facilities.

When we talk about this movie, we will open a wide conversation, cos there’s so many things that we can talk about the movie. Every scene is really meangingful. There’s a scene about Salman, one of the student that read a poem, and i think that its great when he said the truth about Indonesia. my students really had to watched this movie to open their eye about nationalism.

hhhmmm…

last day with my kids

today is our last school day…

we play, we laugh, we’re just having fun. we sing and dance in the morning, become a statue and just play the game. in the end of the day, they have art performances. one thing that also makes me proud is, the can easy adapted with the new movement and they have self confidence.

i remember a year ago when first time i saw them. some of them still shy, some of them already shown that they have self confidence. 7 boys and 7 girls with different type. first week is really hard for us, to build our rules. they were so talkaktive. they talk all they time. we say 1 word, and they will speak 5 or more sentences. and its quite hard for us. esp, some subject teacher already give sign that they are “nakal”, compare to our pararel class.

we work so hard to make them understand our rules. we even put our rules behind our reward card that we called “smile card”. every time we taught, we always ask them to repeat our rules. also during our morning and last circle time. after two or three month doing this same action, they have change. everytime they want to speak, they have to raise their hand first, they also asking permittion if they want to sit to their next friend. still loved to talk and still active, but now they become more easy to hadle.

meanwhile we see that our kids really love to sing and dance. and guess what, me and my partner also showing the same hobby as our kids. so… sometimes during our circle time, we sing and dance, we turn the song and they dance following the rythm.

as i wrote before, we have our special kids. at first, most of them are confused, but we always remind them that he is different from the other kids, he still have to learn more how to listen and follow instruction. we have buddy system. buddy system job desc is helping this special friend to sit, to listen the teacher, and help them if they have difficulty with pur rules. its really work because we give them reward to they that can helped their friend.

my kids really wants to be the best up on their friend. so, most of them are compete to help our special kids (esp, the girls). we also make our special kids as special person, for example, when we have a dance performance, we give our special kids a task to be the judges to decide who is our best dancer in the class. thats why all of the kids are compete to give their best performances and ask my special kids to choose them as the best dancer. and at that time they are really have fun.

we also give a fun learning method to our kids. we loved to play the game during our learning process. we have quizzes, puzzle atc, and they really enjoy it.we oftenly have a new game. sometimes we describe a thing and they have to guess or search that thing, and some times we asked them to describe things and their friend have to find the things. thats how we teach them about description.

our latest week are filled with copying game and hold the laugh game. in our copying game, we asked them to create some movement and their friend will follow the movement. it teach them to have self confidence in front of the class. in hold the laugh game, we asked them to hold their laugh as long as possible. meanwhile, we asked our funny clown student to tease them. this game helped them to stay focused, and

a year gone by, now is their time to continue to the 2nd grade, and i really missed them so much. how i missed their dance, how i missed all the time we have. they filled my day with laugh and all those crazy things that a teacher can feel.
